Holiday Family Session Tips For the PNW Family | Buckley, WA Family Photographer
Fall is here
The leaves are starting to turn and the air is starting to get crisp, fall is in there air. Fall is probably one of the busiest times of the year for a photographer. You are looking for a new family photo to send in your holiday cards and maybe one to put in a frame or two to put on your wall. Though I prefer studio work most the year due to the weather being so rainy I like to save a special time of year for outdoor sessions. Fall is only time of year that I offer outdoor sessions since I love the Pacific Northwest and the beauty that it has in this season. Click here to book a session with me.
Whether you are having a session with me or with another photographer here in the PNW here are 3 tips that will help you plan and prepare for it.
1# Dress accordingly
Fall sessions are likely to have some beautiful fall colors in them. Because of this I recommend that you dress in neutral colors like grey, beige, black and white. These colors will help you stand out from your back ground because you want your family to pop not get lost in the back ground. You can also dress in fall clothing like plaids, boots, chunky infinity scarves and cardigans.
2# Consider the sun
Golden hour is a pretty common term but for those that don’t know if is the hour to hour and a half before sundown. Here is the PNW our days get short fast and golden hour is still the very best time to be photographed outdoors. So when you are scheduling your session make sure that you consider when sundown will be. The farther we get into fall and closer to winter the sooner the sun will go down and the earlier your session will have to be. Gone are the long days of summer when we are given long days to get everything done.
3# Find your perfect location
In the PNW we have such a diverse landscape that the list is so long on location ideas. Some more popular locations would be Christmas tree farms, parks with lots of leafy trees that are turning lovely fall colors and snowy mountain peaks. Some other out of the box locations might be downtown in the city for a more urban look, one of the signature rocky beaches of the puget sound or something more rustic like the countryside. When you can quite literally drive from the beach to the mountains in under an hour your options are pretty good. Make sure that you use your photographer as a resource on where is best to shoot based on what type of location you are interested in.
