How to Prepare for a Photo Session at Home | Tacoma Family Photographer

3 tips to better prepare you for your photo shoot at home

You have booked your shoot with your photographer and decided that your home was the best venue, which I love that you did. Unlike an outdoor session where you might only have to worry about your clothes and whether your kids will behave, you now have to think about how to prepare your family for this session at home.

I am going to walk you through 3 tips that will have you in full confidence for your at home photo shoot.

Tidy up your space, don’t deep clean

We all take pride in our homes and want it to look it’s best, for us and for company, and especially for our photo shoot that we have invested in. Being a Family Photographer that works in the homes of many PNW families, I can say that many of those families have taken lots of time to curate their homes.

If you find yourself with a shoot rapidly approaching, and a calendar full of events, don’t fret about deep cleaning your home. A simple tidy to pick up any clutter that may have accrued during the week will be just fine.

This is also not the time to redecorate or make any drastic changes to your home! Keep it simple and don’t stress.

Think about the areas of your home you want to feature

Now I am not going to tell you that you get final say on what areas of the house your photographer shoots in. That is because they will know what rooms have the best light to give you the best photos. However it’s good to have an idea of which areas of your home that are special to you and if you do have any special requests to have them thought out before hand.

In most cases your home will have enough light to work with and some photographers will have lights that they can use to make even the darkest areas look like broad day light. Make sure you know what your photographer has available for you.

Plan an activity

This tip is my favorite for shoots at home. One thing that I do specifically with at home shoots is capture your family doing an activity that you love. This can be reading in bed to picking strawberries in the back yard garden!

Activities really personalize your photo shoot and allows your family to relax and have fun on another level. So brainstorm 1-2 activities. Keep in mind the length of your session when deciding to make sure there is time to capture it all. Your activity will be only a portion of your entire session experience.

There you have it! Preparing should be simple and stress free so you are excited and looking forward to your photo shoot. How do you feel about these tips? Do you find them helpful? Are there other questions you have about preparing your home? Let me know in the comments.
