Pros and Cons of having Senior Photos in Winter

Depending your vision for your senior photos there’s no right or wrong season. The PNW has different attributes to offer each season, Spring blooms, Summer sun, Fall colors and Winter snow.

You just have to decide which one is best for you. If you have been thinking that maybe winter might be right for you or maybe you haven’t considered it before here are some Pros and Cons for having a Winter Senior Photoshoot.

Winter Senior Sessions Pros and Cons

Cons:

  1. It’s cold

  2. It might rain

  3. May not get sunshine

  4. Snow!

Pros:

  1. Moody Vibes

  2. Layers

  3. Earlier session times for golden hour

  4. Snow!

Let's breakdown each of these Pros and Cons below!

Breaking Down the Pros

Moody Vibes - I am sure that you have heard of light and airy and dark and moody when describing editing styles for photography. Winter is definitely in the Dark and moody category. The tones tend to be more muted and the light more contrasty.

Layers - If you enjoy layering up with coats and boots this is your time. Its chilly and you can add all the fashion accessories to your hearts desire.

Earlier Golden Hour - The days are shorter and if there happens to be some sun in the forecast that means that we don’t have to wait until 8PM to start your session like in summer. Start times tend to be in the 3-4PM hours.

Snow! - If you love snow there is only one time of year to see it and its winter. If you are lucky there will be some lowland snow and if you want an adventure then off toward the near by mountains we go!

Breaking down the Cons

It’s cold - If you are not into the cold then this season may not be for you. If you dream of wearing a flow dress then you should plan on Spring or Summer seasons for your Senior photos.

It might rain - Rain in winter is a real thing. And there is a higher possibility that we may have to reschedule your session due to rain. So if you aren’t super flexible have your session in Spring, Summer or even Fall.

May not get sunshine - Along with other weather issues. We tend to have more overcast skies in winter. If you are dead set on Sun I would definitely choose Summer!

Snow! - I know that it’s not for everyone so if you hate snow then winter may not be for you.

Winter is definitely a vibe but not for everyone. There are days when we get really luck with warmer weather and no rain but its quite unpredictable. I hope that this was helpful for you in deciding whether winter is the right season for your Senior Photo Shoot.
