What to wear: How to dress baby for your in home newborn photo session

The newborn stage of your child’s life is such a short window of time and capturing it with an at home newborn photo session (how to prepare for the in-home session) is one of the best ways to have those memories to look back on for years to come!

You’ve decided on what you and the rest of the family will be wearing but what should baby be wearing for the session? Not to worry, styling your newborn is easier than you think! Amazon is a great place to look for outfits for your newborn and the best part is that you can shop from the comfort of your own home! Here are three tips that you can keep in mind while shopping that can help you decide on how to dress your baby for your in-home newborn photo shoot!

Tip #1: Choose soft and cozy fabrics

To add texture, choose soft and cozy fabrics. Think knits, muslin, linen, or ribbed fabrics. The soft skin of your newborn baby will enhance the look of these fabric textures and that will add dimension and depth to your newborn photos! Luckily, there is no shortage of soft fabrics when it comes to baby clothes so don’t stress about going out and picking up a brand new outfit as you most certainly have something you can use in their current wardrobe. Whatever you choose, make sure it fits well and has that cozy factor!

Tip #2: Keep the outfit simple and timeless

No frills are needed here! What you don’t want is the outfit to detract from baby so avoid loud patterns, text, or logos. We want baby to stand out, not what he/she is wearing. Delicate and subtle patterns are a great option. Small stripes, delicate animal doodles, or pretty florals paired with solids can add interest and elevate the look of your photos.

You could also choose a solid neutrals or pastel fabric. Neutrals and pastels are timeless and classic! No matter what your baby’s skin tone is, a good neutral or pastel pallet will look great and are easy to pair with what the rest of the family is wearing for the session. A simple white onesie can make a big impact and don’t newborns always look so cute in them?!

Tip #3: Less is more

This next outfit tip is not really an outfit at all! Who doesn’t love pictures of their baby in a diaper?! A diapered newborn is a great option and allows their sweet little features to be captured that would otherwise be hidden by their outfit. Features like chunky little thighs, baby bellies and baby belly buttons! You can also incorporate a beautiful swaddle that you love to keep baby as comfy as possible during the session!

Dressing your baby for your in-home newborn photo session does not need to be stressful. As long as you use these three simple tips, you can’t go wrong! Remember to choose soft fabrics to add a bit of texture and a touch of cozy. Keep the outfit simple and timeless by dressing baby in neutral or pastel colors and avoiding text, logos, and loud patterns. Or, opt for keeping your baby in their diaper to highlight their newborn features in the best and cutest way!
