What to Wear to Your Winter Photo Shoot at Home | Ideas for Mom

Winter is coming! Not sure what you wear for your winter photo shoot?

You may have found yourself needing to have a family session in the winter and wondering what to wear. Because the days are short and colder the best place for your session is in your home. This blog is going to talk about what you should wear for a photo shoot in winter in your home.

This is the 3rd installment of the What to Wear series for each season of the year with Sam Dorn of Learning to Bloom! Check her out and see what great tips she has below!

The Winter season is the perfect time to have a photoshoot at home!

There is such an easy and relaxed feeling you get from the photos taken at an at-home session. You haven’t had to manage getting everyone ready and in the car to travel to your location and you haven’t had to worry about bad weather causing a reschedule. An at-home session is comfortable for the whole family, especially your young children.

When approaching the question of what to wear for your shoot you should keep that comfort in mind. Simple elegance with a cozy twist! Here are my three tips for styling you and your family for your Winter at-home photo session!

1. Get Cozy

When I say cozy, I don’t mean your old sweats with holes in them and the t-shirt you’ve had for 10 years with the stretched-out collar and bleach stains. I am talking about a cozy but elevated look! My uniform during the Fall and Winter is a nice pair of jeans and a sweater. To me, there isn’t a more perfect combination for a family photoshoot! A sweater like this is simple and timeless. So comfortable but a step up from a crewneck sweatshirt.

Pair this with some simple chic accessories for an elevated look. Something that’s not too busy or garish. A simple set of necklaces like this and/or a special pair of earrings is the perfect touch to add a little sparkle. You can also add some fun fluffy socks to boost your coziness factor instead of shoes or boots!

2. Neutral Pallet

I love neutrals during the winter months. I think there is something so beautiful and elegant about a white or cream sweater this time of year. Neutrals are such an effortless style choice. They are timeless. Neutral pallets make it so easy to coordinate your family’s outfits and allow the use of patterns like plaid or buffalo check to add interest and texture to your photos as I think all solid colors can seem a little flat.

It’s also more likely that neutrals will go better with the decor in your home. Choose one that you think compliments your decor best and go for it! There really isn’t a wrong way to use neutrals in this way!

3. Get a little festive with a pop of color

Now, I know that I said in my last tip that I love a neutral pallet this time of year but I also love a pop of color! It’s so easy to do with a neutral pallet too! If you’re having your photos done before Christmas, a beautiful pop of red in a sweater or on your nails is such a lovely touch. If it’s after the holiday season, try a beautiful pastel blue, a forest green, or even a dark burgundy coordinated into your outfits! I think that having a pop of color will really bring your photos to life!
