Why I offer Plexiglass with my Frames | Buckley, WA Family Photographer

Why I offer plexiglass over glass in my frames

When you think of a picture frame you might automatically think that the frame would have a piece of glass to protect nd view your photographs.

It’s true that this has been the standard and traditional presentation for picture frames. Technology has advanced and offered an alternative option to regular glass. Plexiglass is a newer material being used in picture frames and has some great additional benefits to glass.

1# Shatter Proof

You don’t have to be worried about it shattering like glass. Not that you shouldn’t still be careful with your frames, because the outer frame itself whether wood, metal or something else still needs to be kept looking nice, you don’t have to be as careful when handling your frames. Situations like moving day can be worrisome. I’ve had my fair share of moves and my frames with glass had to be packed carefully and extra special care had to be taken during the move itself. If your frame happens to fall, imagine earthquake, god forbid, or the kids running around and a frame accidentally gets knocked to the floor, you won’t have to worry about the glass breaking and picking up and disposing of all those glass shards.

2# Lighter Weight

Plexiglass is lighter than traditional glass. While this might not be a huge advantage for an 8x10 frame it certainly is for larger frame at 24x30 and up. This will come into play when installing your frames on the wall. The amount and type of hardware you use to hang the frame depends on the weight of the frame and the lighter you can make the frame especially on those larger frames the better, safer and more secure it will be.

3# Seeing True Colors

You will be seeing your images true color. Although it seems that glass I’d truest clear it actually has a green tint to it from the iron content in it. (Getting all science-y on you guys! Lol) so when using Plexiglass instead you are looking through a truly clear surface. Probably something you never even thought about, right?

The downside

Now you are probably thinking there has to be a downside and here it is. Plexiglass is far more prone to scratching than glass and attracts more dust. However with a key tip for cleaning you shouldn’t have any problems. There are special care instructions when it comes to cleaning plexiglass. You must only use a soft microfiber cloth to wipe down the plexiglass when cleaning is necessary. Using a paper towel for example could result in micro scratches and most definitely little paper towel fibers left on the surface.

So with every framed print you buy I include one microfiber cloth and care instructions so you have the tools you need to take care of your family heirloom.

There you have it. To see samples of the beautiful frames that I offer click here.
