How to Prepare for School Photo Day | Pierce County School Photographer

There can be a lot of expectation and pressure around school portraits.

Our kids want to look their best and we want the photographer to get the perfect smiles so that we can print out the photos, hang them up and send them to family. So what are the most important things to keep in mind when preparing? Let’s get into it!

3 Most important tips for preparing for school photos!

  1. Hair advice: If your child needs a hair cut I would get that 1 week before photo day. This will allow the cut to settle and not give them the brand new hair cut look that can sometimes look a little too perfect. Keep hair in a classic style. This is not the time to try a new style. I always suggest that long hair be pulled mostly back behind the shoulders so that we can see your child’s beautiful face! And that any long side bangs are secured with a clip.

  2. Picking the right clothing. Choose clothes that are comfortable and easy to maintain. If you child attends a larger school they may have to sit through some amount of school before they have their photos taken. So what they wear needs to stay looking good. Avoid clothing that is elaborate or could possible shift out of place before they sit down for their photo.

  3. Talk to your kids about expectations for the day. Let your kids relax. Tell them it’s ok for them to be themselves. For younger kids, if they are nervous reassure them that it will be quick and that nothing scary will happen. Don’t encourage them to say cheese at the camera because forcing a smile ends up with that static grin lacking joy, and we don’t want that.

These tips should give you a base to get your child ready for a good school photo. However not all school photographers are created equal. The school photos that we have become accustom to haven’t evolved much in style or approach. If you want something different for your kids, a more timeless and genuine school portrait there is another way.

Modern School Portraits are about capturing your child’s unique personality. No assembly line, tag em’ and bag em’ approach. A more personal experience for you and your child.
