What to wear to your Maternity Photo Session? | Buckley, WA Maternity Photographer | Brooke Holliday Photography

I often get asked what to wear to a maternity session by my clients. Which is a really great question to start a conversation about how to prepare. Wardrobe can be a big part of preparing for a photoshoot and there are a few specific things to think about when preparing for a maternity session.

What not to wear

In my sessions I like to strip down a little to get implied nudity and in doing that some skin which normally would be covered will be exposed. So I always suggest not to wear anything that will be tight or constrict your body. Think bra, underwear or support bands.

Also do not bring any baggy clothes to wear for your session. You are more than welcome to show up in comfortable yoga pants and a big shirt but when it comes to stepping in front of the camera you want your clothes to be fitted.

Colors, Textures and Patterns for Maternity Sessions

I love neutrals and I love bold colors. I think that both can tell a story in your images. Bring colors that you love and feel confident in. Stay with solid colors as color block clothing can be distracting.

Lace, silk and chiffon are lovely textures that will look good in the studio under studio lights. I have various fabrics that can be wrapped around the body to look like a dress or not.

Patterns are not recommended unless it is a a delicate pattern of simple flowers on a white or black background. Patterns distract from you, the most important part of your images.

Simplicity is king

When choosing your clothing keep it simply. From example if you are wanting a flow dress make id a solid color and choose a pair of earrings to match. Don’t over do it with accessories. If you are wanting something more casual pick a solid pant and top that are form fitting. Minimalism will help you in preparing but will also keep your images clean and elegant.
