The 3 Best Poses for Newborn Photography

Newborn Photography is near and dear to my heart. Photographing my newborn was what sparked my passion again when I thought that I had all but lost my interest in photography.

Lifestyle Newborn Photography is the specific genre that I will be speaking to today. As a Lifestyle Newborn Photographer I do not intricately pose newborn babies. Instead I focus on connection and so, most poses will be with baby being held by their parents or siblings. To me capturing this perspective is much much more meaningful than a cutesy photo of your newborn wrapped in a swaddle with hands under their chin, while asleep.

The feelings that will be felt while you view yourself connecting and loving on your baby is what gets me up in the morning, and keeps me photographing families and newborns over and over again! So let’s get into my top 3 poses that I capture at every newborn session.

Newborn Pose #1 Mom and Baby - Laying on the bed

When I photograph your Newborn I am looking to get baby photographed with each individual member of the family, plus all together and different combinations in-between. When focusing on mom and baby, I like to have mom lay down on the bed on her belly, if that is comfortable, with ankles crossed up towards the ceiling. This not only gives a beautiful perspective of mom but it allows you to cradle your baby and really get those lovely connected photos together.

Newborn Pose #2 Baby Alone - Perspective from above

When photographing baby alone I love to get all angles and photos of details, like their tiny hands and feet! My very favorite perspective is getting baby from above while they are laying in the crib, bed or floor on a fun blanket. this allows me to showcase baby in all their perfect glory. For me it makes a perfect and timeless portrait of your baby.

Newborn Pose #3 - Mom, Dad and Baby - Mom and Dad holding baby together

In photography there are some technical aspects that make photographs more interesting and help to enhance your photos while they are also emitting those feelings of love! Photographing mom and dad holding baby together creates these triangles of faces, which helps your eye move through the photo. Creating a visually appealing photo full of heart.

So while you can expect to get a gallery of many different photos, these are 3 staples for me in my work. Thank you for reading, and I have additional resources for you below.

XOXO Brooke!
