What rooms to use for your at home photoshoot

So you decided to use your home as the location for your upcoming photoshoot, heck ya! I whole heartedly believe that your home is the perfect place to photograph your family or important milestone memories.

One of the questions that you may be asking yourself is what rooms should we use. As a Family Photographer in Seattle I have lots of experience photographing in homes around the PNW and beyond. And I have a few suggestions for you. Keep reading to see the my 4 favorite places to photograph Family and Motherhood sessions at home!

1st room: The primary bedroom

This is your room! This is one of the most intimate areas of the home. It’s the place where you get to get cozy and snuggle up with your favorite blanket and watch a show or read a book before bed.

If you have kids its where you may be co sleeping or spending quiet moments with your kids (or jumping on the bed and dancing like at my house!). This room is great for everyone together getting cozy and connecting and making meaningful photos.

2nd room for at home photoshoots: The living room

This is a great room for activities like playing with toys or reading together. It could also be a great place for a gentle pillow fight or dance party!

This room usually is one of the best areas for light and a bigger space to move around and have fun!

3rd Room: The kids rooms or nursery!

If you have kids I like to take a portrait of each child in their room. This is a great way to document them in the stage of life and age they are right now, plus you will have the memories of what their room looked like when they were young.

4th room for photos at home: The kitchen

The kitchen is another great communal space if for some reason the Primary Bedroom or Living Room don’t work out the Kitchen is a great alternative. This is a great space for activities like baking (if you are ok getting a bit messy). Or you could color at the dinning room table together.

Bonus: Your front/back yard

If you have a session at home and still want a little bit of the outdoors the front or back yard is a great little addition to your at home photoshoot. This of course will be perfect for any weather except for rain!
